The following databases are comprised of Lepidoptera and Odonata donated by April Walsh to the Illinois Natural History Survey from the estate of Charles A. Bridges, III.

Charles A. Bridges, III was born 17 September 1941 and died 21 January 1995. During his lifetime, he produced seven invaluable reference catalogues for the orders of Lepidoptera (Moths and Butterflies) and Odonata (Dragonflies and Damselflies).

Charles received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics at MIT(1963) and a Master’s in Physics at the University of Illinois in 1965. Charles was an avid entomologist. It was while he was employed (1970) at the Sacramento Peak Observatory team in Sunspot, New Mexico, that he began producing the series of entomological catalogues. He continued this independent catalogue work for the next 25 years. He was also employed as an assistant specialist, from 1980 until his death, at the Computer-based Educational Research Laboratory (CERL) at the University of Illinois. During this time, he was often in contact, as friend and colleague, with the entomologists at the Survey and the University of Illinois. He was a member of the Lepidopterist Society of America and the Dragonfly Society of America.

The Lepidoptera database contains 4,269 records and the Odonata 861 records. The following fields are contained in these databases; family, genus, species, and country and state localities. If you would like more information (dates collected, county, collectors, etc.) for specific groups or would like to borrow some of this material please contact the Insect Collection Manager, Tommy McElrath.
